War veteran Captain Sir Thomas Moore (aka Captain Tom, 100) became world news when he raised millions for the UK National Health Service. He inspired a whole generation of seniors to do the same. Retired GP Alfons Leempoels (103) from Rotselaar, Belgium must be among the oldest.

When Captain Tom started his fundraiser, he aimed to raise 1,000 pounds. Not in his wildest dreams he would have imagined that his initiative would raise over 50 million pounds and that he would inspire fellow seniors in his native UK as well as abroad. In the UK, Joan Rich (101) and Dabirul Islam Choudhury (100) have started fundraisers of their own. Meanwwhile in Russia, Zina Korneva (97) is doing the same. And Belgium? Belgium has Dr. Alfons Leempoels.

Walking a marathon for charity

When Tom Moore’s story reached the Belgian media, Dr. Leempoels’ children suggested he could do something similar. Not only does Dr. Leempoels walk just as well, he is Moore’s senior by a number of years. His granddaughter jokingly said he should run a marathon, and so the idea to walk a marathon was born.

In the course of June, Dr. Leempoels completed a full marathon, or 42.2 km. To achieve this goal, Dr. Leempoels walked 10 laps of 145 metres each in his garden every day. He started with three laps in the morning, did another three at noon, and walked four more in the evening. After a month, all these laps added up 42.2 km. To avoid miscounting, after every completed lap Dr. Leempoels puts a stick in a bowl.

Your donation goes towards finding a vaccine against corona. After completing the marathon, Dr. Leempoels raised over 25,000 euros for corona-related research at University Hospital Leuven.
