Spring is usually the busiest time of year for the Dutch flower trade. This year, however, things have become quiet at Aalsmeer Flower Auction in the Netherlands, the blossom trade capital of the world. The corona crisis has brought the international flower trade to an almost complete standstill. In an effort to help boost the wilting flower industry Dutch companies and its citizens are stepping in to help stem the losses caused by Covid-19 and to make life a little more bearable for many who are suffering during these challenging times.

Flowers for the elderly

Flowers, especially cut flowers, only have a short lifespan. If not sold, they need to be thrown away. Because of this reason some producers already decided to donate their flowers to hospitals and nursing homes. The sector’s plight has not gone unnoticed though.

Dutch initiative Red je Boeketje (‘Save your Bouquet’) aims to financially support flower producers, while at the same time brighten the day of thousands of elderly in care homes, who cannot see friends and family because of corona. The concept is simple: for every 15 euros donated, Red je Boeketje delivers a lovely bouquet to a care home inhabitant.

Do you prefer sunflowers? Well, that is an option too! By sending sunflowers, you even support three parties: the flower producer, the recipient, and Dutch NGO De Zonnebloem (‘The Sunflower’), which organizes activities for disabled. Who will you order a bouquet for?

Red je Boeketje is an initiative of parcel service Red je Pakketje, in cooperation with Dutch flower producers, EY and flower delivery service Frederique’s Choice.
