When confronted with a crisis, there are two things you can do: flee or fight. Wilma Cavaleiro and KUJINGA decided to fight. Using their extensive network, they started producing and distributing free soap to promote handwashing in Angola.

Before corona, Cavaleiro’s main mission was to connect Angola’s beauty services to their customers through the KUJINGA health and beauty app. Her network as a beauty and health entrepreneur came in handy when corona struck. Cavaleiro: “Identify the problem you want to solve, and start with the resources you have. Those resources can be used to different end goals than your usual business, which can serve the community in challenging times”.

Cavaleiro is an entrepreneur who does exactly what she preaches. She uses her network and knowledge of personal care to serve her community in a difficult time. Cavaleiro’s beauty providers and clients collect cosmetic oils and cooking oils, which are used as main ingredients for sustainable soap. These are then distributed for free among communities in need, so that Angolans with little means can also follow hygiene and health protocols meant to flatten the curve.

For this project, Cavaleiro and KUJINGA teamed up with the Otchiva Project and AmbiRicelo Indústria - a company that recycles and produces ecological products. In addition to providing Angolans with free sustainable soap, she also offers free business advice to small health and beauty businesses on how to get through the crisis.

Cavaleiro receives support from the Orange Corners programme in Angola. Read more about KUJINGA and other creative responses to Covid 19 in the Orange Corners #CounteringCovid series.
