Always wanted to be a writer? Amidst lockdowns and social distancing, chances are good that you will find yourself with more time on your hands than ever before. So why not take the opportunity to practice your creative writing skills? Playwright Lauren Gunderson is there to encourage you and help you out.

Gunderson is the most produced playwright in the United States and winner of many awards. Unlike distant Hollywood celebrities, she is accessible. Gunderson is but one of many playwrights offering free classes in these corona times.

Storytelling

Inspired by a colleague she started to teach online playwriting classes following the outbreak of the pandemic in March. From her home in San Francisco, she covers topics such as storytelling, structure, stage directions and character development.

Her classes are met with great enthusiasm by a growing number of viewers. Hundreds of people are watching live, and an even larger number catches up later. “I think people are engaging because they believe theater isn’t going anywhere. They’re convinced that we will be back and we will need stories to get us back together,” Gunderson says.

Happy ending

Surprisingly enough, she adds, many of her students are high school and colleague students. With their regular classes cancelled, their creative projects came to an abrupt end. And despite the negative impact of the current crisis, there is a happy ending: the future generation of playwrights now has the chance to learn from the best in the field.
